CAPITALS HAMMERED ON THE ROAD DOWN 2

For 40 minutes, the Capitals were playing a solid game and actually took away the momentum. Then the third period happened. The first period was a back and forth affair as both teams played it close to the vest. Washington would win the shot clock but only 7-6. The scoreboard was even closer. Goulet opened the scoring, but Messier scored his 7th in the last minute to tie the game. After 1 period it was 1-1.

The second period was dominated by the Capitals but Froese held his own. Outshooting the Sabres 14-5 in the second they could never take the lead. Gartner scored in the first minute, but McKinnon tied the game at the 8 minute mark with his 1st. Boschman would then score but again Gretzky would tie it on the PP with his 2nd of the playoffs at the halfway mark. While the Capitals kept pushing, Froese would shut the door, and that would come back to haunt them.

The third period was a completely lopsided victory by the Sabres. The Capitals did put up 8 shots, but were once again unable to beat Froese. Meanwhile Buffalo would fire 22 shots at the Capitals and find the back of the net 5 times.
