CAPITALS DROP GAME 1 IN BUFFALO

After finally defeating the Hartford Whalers after 2 seasons of being knocked out by them, the Capitals came out flat in Game 1 in Buffalo.

Although the shots were even at 8 in the first, Buffalo was able to beat Moffat twice to send the teams to the second with the Sabres up 2-0.

In the second period, the Capitals really showed their dead legs as they would be out played badly. Buffalo would win the shot clock 10-3. It was a productive 3 shots though. Buffalo would get up 3-0 before Krush would score his 2nd of the playoffs to get the game back within 2. Just over 2 minutes later though Buffalo would once again score to stretch the lead to 3. Kurri would draw the Caps back with his 6th of the playoffs at the 13 minute mark. However with the score 4-2 Moffat just couldn't close the door and the Sabres would connect with their 3rd of the period and end Moffat's night

If there was a bright spot, it was the Capitals 3rd period. They owned the period but didn't have enough in the tank to come all the way back. Kurri scored his 7th and 2nd of the game around the halfway mark to pull the score to 5-3. Once again though their tender, this time Lindbergh, couldn't make the next save and Buffalo would score and get it to 3 again. Brown would score his 2nd of the playoffs and Washington got it to 6-4 but it would not be enough as that would be the final score. The Capitals did have a small victory outshooting the Sabres 16-11 in the third.

Special teams was a downfall as the PP went 0-4 while the team gave up no PK chances. A goal on the PP could have changed the momentum for sure.

Mike Moffat took the loss making only 12 saves on 17 shots and looking tired from the first round.

1st star - Denis Savard

2nd star - Michel Goulet

3rd star - Tom Kurvers

Kurri had a solid night with 2 goals on his 2 shots.

Mike Krushlynski had 1 goal, 2 points and  +2

Dug Brown had 1 goal, 2 points and a +2.

Game 2 again in Buffalo and hopefully a better showing by the team and Mike Moffat.
