Toronto closed out their four game road trip going undefeated after a  4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Toronto got out to a quick lead just 41 seconds into the game on a snipe by former Sabre Pat Lafontaine on Mike Palmateer. He then notched his 2nd of the game and 4th of the season late in 2nd period to give the Leafs a 2-0 lead. The Sabres got on the board early in the 3rd  period on a Tom Kurvers slapper through a crowd to cut the lead in half.  But only a few moments later, Dale Hawerchuk  restored the 2 goal lead, burying his 6th goal of the season, thanks to a nifty setup on the powerplay by Dino Ciccerelli. Former Leaf Steve Thomas scored his 4th of the season to make it 3-2 with the Sabres shorthanded but could not get that tying marker as the Leafs defence shut it down in the final 10 minutes. Chris Chelios then put the game away with a blast from the point on the power play with under 2 minutes left to seal the win for the Leafs.

Special teams was the difference maker as the Leafs went 3-7 on the powerplay while the Sabres finished 0-7 but did have the shorthanded marker.

Coach Dave King was pleased with his teams effort both last night and over the past four games but knows not to read top much into the quick start

“Obviously it’s nice to get on a bit of a streak early on. The boys are feeling good but there’s a lot of work that needs to be done still and things we need to improve on,” explained King.

The Leafs begin a 5 game home stand starting tonight against the New Jersey Devils. Dominik Hasek will get the start once again. Injured forward Todd Ewen will miss atleast one more game but could be back against Chicago on Friday downing the full cage as recovers from a broken jaw.
