SMJ Cup Playoffs

Going the Distance - Part 2!

Series Tied 3-3

For the second straight series, the Detroit Red Wings have come back from a 3-1 series deficit to force a deciding Game #7.  And for the second straight series, they will have that series at home and with all the momentum.  Basically, you might as well give them the Cup now. Eric Weinrich got the Flyers off to an early lead with his 2nd of the playoffs, but before the first period was over, Detroit had a commanding lead.  Brent Ashton, Alexander Mogilny an Denis Savard scored goals in a 3 minute span in the second half of the period to take control.  Doug Smith made it 4-2 heading into the final period, when Wayne Gretzky and Carey Wilson scored to make it close, but Brian Bellows gave the Wings some insurance. Michel Goulet and Gretzky led all scorers with 3 points each, but it ultimately wasn't enough.  Detroit will welcome Tom Fergus back to the lineup for Game #7, but blue liner Steve Konroyd will miss this most important game.  It is the 9th time in NFHL history that the SMJ Cup finals will go to a deciding 7th game, the last being Hartford's 7-game victory over the Colorado Rockies in 1992.
