Offseason Recap – Entry Draft Part 2

The Rangers had three more first round draft picks after selecting Mattias Ohlund at number five. The Rangers selected Radek Bonk with the tenth pick, followed by Sheldon Souray and Mathieu Dandenault with picks fourteen and fifteen, respectively. Souray appears to be the pick of the bunch when it comes to looking toward the future. Bonk, a centerman, really struggles to put the puck in the net, and, unless he becomes one of the best assist men in the league, that weakness will keep him from being a key contributor at the pro level. Dandenault is already considered a miss and, with so many better prospects for the Rangers to develop, he will most likely be forgotten. Souray, on the other hand, looks like he could develop into a true two-way defenseman by his early 20s. He will need to work on his discipline and build up his stamina, but those two things can certainly be worked on with the proper trainers and coaches. Souray, along with Ohlund, should be right behind McCabe to claim a spot on the pro team in the not too distant future.
