The NFHL Game of the Night

Hawks Ground Jets

The Winnipeg Jets started their recent run after being dumped by the non-playoff bound St. Louis Blues.  That loss against a clearly inferior team galvanized the team.  Since then, they were undefeated in 17 games, including winning their last 11 to take over top spot in the Campbell Conference and the league, though Minnesota recently passed them. Tonight, they took on another team below the playoff cut line, perhaps overlooked them, and came out on the wrong end of a 6-3 decision. The Chicago Blackhawks were the victors, scoring three times in each of the first 2 periods to close the game out fairly early.  Six different players scored, with Ari Haanpaa, Bryan Smolinski and Ulf Dahlen leading the way, each scoring and adding 2 assists.  Frank Musil, Bill Guerin and Dave Morrison scored the other Chicago goals. Dave Ellett, Jamie Huscroft and Jari Kurri tried in vain to keep the streak alive.  THe loss means Winnipeg remains 2 points back of Minnesota, but give up their game in hand.  They also maintain their 4 point lead on Vancouver for the Smythe Division lead.  As for Chicago, the playoffs are still a dream, but they are now a respectable 7-2-1 in their last 10 and have surpassed Los Angeles for 10th in the conference.
