The NFHL Game of the Night

Nordiques, Leafs Clinch

It was a big night for the Wales Conference as 4 of the 5 teams competing for the final 3 playoff spots were in action. And when all the dust cleared, two of those spots were claimed and the third has one team with a hand on it. The Quebec Nordiques were the first to clinch as they beat up on the Boston Bruins 9-5. Ray Whitney led the way with 2 goals and 2 assists.  Then, the Toronto Maple Leafs played their final game of the 1995 season, but lost 2-1 to the Hartford Whalers, but still clinched their post season ticket, though they drop to 7th in the conference with the loss. Finally, in the biggest battle of the night, the Pittsburgh Penguins edged the New York Rangers 5-4.  The Rangers have no one to blame but themselves as they blew a 4-2 3rd period lead, giving up 3 unanswered goals to Pittsburgh, arguably costing them their post season berth.  Scott Stevens had a hat trick in a losing cause.  Pittsburgh, with the win, has now claimed at least a tie for the 8th and final playoff spot. Both the Montreal Canadiens and Rangers can tie the Penguins, but each would have to win their remaining 2 games, while the Penguins would have to lose both of their remaining games.
