Oilers Nip Canucks, Claim 6th

The Edmonton Oilers have clinched 6th place in the Campbell Conference tonight with a narrow 5-4 overtime victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Doug Weight scored short handed with just 37 seconds left in the extra period to give the Oilers the win. It was their first shot of the extra period. Phil Housley, Patrick Sundstrom, Brent Gilchrist and Pavel Bure scored the goals in regulation. The win ruins Cam Neely's hat trick performance for Vancouver. Tom Kurvers scored the other Vancouver goal. With the win, Edmonton breaks their tie with Vancouver, leading them by 2 points. Vancouver just has 1 game remaining, so the best they can do is tie Edmonton, but even with a win, the Oilers have the tie break advantage, meaning the Canucks will finish with the 7th seed. This also means they will have a first round meeting with either Colorado or Winnipeg, whichever team finishes 2nd in the conference. Edmonton will play the Detroit Red Wings in the first round, becoming the 2nd playoff matchup set for the upcoming playoffs.
