Several Sabres Nearing Major Season Milestones

The Buffalo Sabres have had a rather up and down season with many victories to be proud of and quite a few missed opportunities that could end up haunting the team and its fan base for years to come. One aspect of the regular season that the team should rally around is that this is the most successful season offensively that the Buffalo Sabres as a team have ever had. Currently, the Sabres as a team sit at a staggering 371 total goals scored, which is 2nd only to the Colorado Rockies, who are currently capping off a historic regular season of their own.

The Sabres currently have 5 games remaining on their schedule but already have a pair of players who have eclipsed the 100 point mark. Michel Goulet leads the way with 111 points despite missing 8 games so far this season. Goulet has already broken the Buffalo Sabres franchise record for points (109) set by Laurie Boschman in 1985. Steve Thomas currently has 103 points and continues to push hard late in the season to catch up to his linemate. The Sabres have 3 players in the league's top 6 in points scored. The 3rd is long-time Buffalo superstar Laurie Boschman. Boschman currently sits at 98 points and is likely to surpass 100 points yet again this season. Boschman's 211 hits also lead his team in that category.

In terms of goal scoring, the Sabres have a trio of players on the cusp of hitting the 40 goal mark. The previously mentioned Michel Goulet has already reached 38 goals, along with his linemates Steve Thomas and Denis Savard. It will be interesting to see if the 3-way tie for the team lead in goals will be broken over the final handful of games.

Rod Shutt has already surpassed the 30 goal mark and sits at 31. There is still time for both Kevin McClelland (29) and Bernie Nicholls (28) to join the 30 goal club this season as well. Lastly, another superstar in striking distance of hitting 30 goals and beating his standing record of most goals ever by a defenseman (29) is Phil Housley. Housley currently sits at 27 goals and would need a big game or two but could still conceivably hit that milestone before season's end.
