Bruins squeak past Hawks
The Boston Bruins started off the season hot, but have since cooled. The defense has been outstanding but the goaltending, not so much. Tonight is a prime example of that. Backup Brian Hayward got the start but was NOT sharp, giving up 4 goals on a mere 14 shots to the Blackhawks in a slim 5-4 Boston win.
The poor goaltending started early on, when Rich Pilon scored shorthanded to give Chicago the early lead. Ziggy and Scott Young both scored on the PP and Young scored his second of the game with under two minutes left in the period to and the Bs were up 3-1 after the first. Shots were 19-6 Boston.
Alain Cote scored in the second to cut the lead to one. Scott Young scored his third, for the first hat trick of his career. Billy Guerin quickly ruined the celebration with his fourth of the season to make it 4-3. Bruins outshot the Hawks 13-4 in the second.
Theo Fleury scored his fourth on the PP before Chicago answers again, this time off the stick of Troy Loney. Thankfully the Bruins were able to hang on for the 5-4 win.
The Bruins need to sort out this goaltending issue out with the defending champion Colorado Rockies next up on the docket.
