A rematch of the first game of the Olympics, but this time a match to determine 5th place in the tournament. The Russians scored twice early in the third period and once again the Canadian offense proved impotent as Canada finishes the Olympics in 6th place. Team USSR improves a position from the 1984 tournament, but certainly a disappointing result for the Mother Land.

Not content to destroy the dreams of one North American nation, the Swedes have upset another one and will now play for the gold medal. Michael Thelven scored twice and then helped to set up the game winner in the final minutes of the game by Jan Ingman. Joel Otto and Pat Lafontaine had the American goals as they came back from a 2-0 3rd period deficit, only to fall short. Sweden will try to go for another North American upset when they take on Quebec in the final match.
