The champs are done! in the biggest surprise in Olympic history, the heavily favoured, star studded Canadian squad is not going to be able to defend its gold medal on home ice. Not only that, they won't even get to play for a medal as their tournament ends with a 3-2 loss to Team Sweden. Sweden struck for 3 goals in the middle frame and Pelle Lindbergh so heroic, stopping a 15-shot barrage in the 2nd period and 33 of 35 shots overall. Sweden now moves on to the semi-finals to play Team USA for a chance to move on to the gold medal match.

Team Quebec is heading back to the Olympic semi-finals, this time hoping for a better result, thanks to a 3-1 victory over Team USSR. Guy Carbonneau and Sergei Makarov traded goals in the first two periods before Ray Bourque put Quebec up for good early in the final frame. Quebec now moves on to take on Czechoslovakia in the semi-finals and an attempt to get to the gold medal match they desperately wanted in 1984.
