The Czechs withstood an early barrage from Team Canada thanks to brilliant goaltending from Dominik Hasek. After the first period, though, the Czechs wrestled control and the Stastny brothers provided the offense as the Czechs shocked Canada, and the world, with a 3-2 victory, handing the Canucks their first loss in Olympic history.

The Americans take charge in Pool B with a close victory over Team Quebec. This was the second game of the night in which the winning team must thank their goalie for keeping them in the game as Quebec out shot Team USA 33-21, but Don Beaupre did just enough to eke out the win. Joe Mullen scored twice for the USA as they are undefeated in group stage and look to have a clear path to the top seed.
